With Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming up, it is a great time to look back and see how far we have come in overcoming racism and segregation. Racism has been a problem in the U.S.A for a long time. It has been a part of American’s lives since some of the first colonists have arrived in the “New World”. It was a way of life and nobody realized how wrong slavery and segregation was. Although we have come far, there is still prejudice towards African Americans. Yes, there are famous athletes, actors, singers, and many more celebrities, but when you think of everyday people it is different. This isn’t true for everyone, but in general Caucasian people are more successful and earn more money. It is 2010, it is time to take action and make a change. We need to treat everyone equally no matter if they are black, white, orange, purple, or if they have blue or red hair. Looks do NOT matter.

Whenever I look at little kids going off to preschool I think of one memory. When I was about four we had just played outside and I had on tennis shoes. When we came back inside for story time i picked the rocks out of my shoes. I was playing with this one little rock and then my teacher told me that I needed to throw it away. Instead of throwing it away, I stuck it up my nose. Then it was nap time. I tried to go to sleep, but I couldn’t because the rock in my nose was very uncomfortable. I tried almost every way possible to get the rock out. When preschool was over I showed my mom, at the time I thought it was cool, but my mom thought otherwise. She took me to the Emergency Room and I had to tell the nurse what happened. My mom was so angry at me. They finally got the rock out of my nose. On my way home from the hospital, my mom told me how important it was not to put anything where it should not go, like a rock in your nose for example. She was glad that I was okay, but mad that I did something so dumb. There is just one thing that you need to know in preschool, never stick a rock up your nose.

I read an article in the Upfront magazine titled, “Founding Amateurs?.” In this article it talks about how most Americans say that they would rather have candidates running for Congress who have never served before, one third of all voters like who is their representative, and President Obama’s approval rating is below fifty percent. Some people are comparing our government to the way it was back when the it was founded in 1776. Overall most people aren’t happy with the way that everything is going. With the way that it is going, we need people with experience, who are not bias. We need people that we can count on in hard times to pull us back to the top.

I read an article in the Upfront magazine and it was titled “Armed and Underage.” This was about how kids all over the world are being forced into dealing with weapons and going into war at such a young age. For me, this is scary. To think about children fighting for their country when they are ten seems wrong to me. It is scary to think about having to go into war, much less do it when you are ten! It says in the article that hunger and poverty are some reasons that parents sell their children into service. This is mostly going on in Africa. After reading the article and looking at the pictures of little girls and boys holding guns looking strong in some cases, but overall looking fearful makes me want to do something about this problem all over the world.

Everyone at one point or another you have made a promise. Sometimes you make promises that you can not keep. For Language Arts I am going to tell you a time when I made a promise that I wasn’t sure if I could keep. My brother kept asking me to update his iPod. I had a lot of homework that night and I did not know if I would have time. I said yes because I knew that that was the right thing to do. I had finished my homework at nine o’clock and I still had to shower and get ready for bed. I knew I was not going to have time to update his iPod and I knew he could live without it updated for one day. The next day, and the day after that I had a ton of homework so I couldn’t update his iPod for three days. Finally on Saturday I updated his iPod. Although I did not do what he wanted at that exact moment I still did what he asked so really I kept my promise.

I asked my parents why we moved and they gave me the general answer of we wanted to be close to my moms parents and there are great schools where I live. One other thing that my parents told me is that they wanted to live in a place like where my mom grew up and where I live is just like the town my mom lived in just in a different state. So there it is, why my parents decided to move.

When you think about “What’s Really Important?” what comes to mind? Your friends or family? Or electronics and money? Today more people need to focus more on how fortunate they are to be healthy and have family and friends, but lots of people are focused on the materialistic things. So ask yourself this, What Really is Important to You?

If you have not read The Giver then don’t continue reading this unless you choose to.

In the book The Giver they live in a world of sameness. The question that I was asked was Explain why feeling and memories have been eliminated from Jonas’ community. In this “utopia” they have no choice or no sense of color. They have no feelings or memories of what has happened in the past years. The community has taken away feelings because they don’t want them to feel pain or regret or sorrow. They don’t want them to remember war or anything dreadful. This “utopia” has taken out everything that makes you who you are.
